Skinny Whale is Ward and Johan, a Belgian progressive rock duo with over 20 years of shared musical history.
Their backgrounds span bigband, grunge, Dutch-language rock and pop, blues, funk, and metal. What came out is progressive rock — warm guitars, vintage keyboards, and no interest in following a trend.
Their debut single "What You Became" was recorded at Dunk Studios with Jonas Everaert and is out now on all streaming platforms. It comes with a lyric video and a live video on YouTube. The follow-up singles "Oh Dear God" and "Cloud 9" were self-produced during lockdown and mastered by Jerboa. More material is finished and in the pipeline.
Skinny Whale is currently looking for a drummer and a bassist to complete the live lineup.
Vocals / Guitar / Bass / Percussion / Electronics
Ward plays guitar, bass, percussion, and handles the vocals. His background runs through metal and funk — you can hear both in how he writes a riff and how he lays down a groove. He's the one in the room who keeps pushing until a take feels right. Based in Deinze.
Keyboards / Hammond / Electronics
Johan plays keyboards — Hammond, Moog, Prophet, Fender Rhodes — alongside electronics. His frame of reference is funk, rock, and jazz-rock, and that shapes how he thinks about a part: texture and feel first, notes second. Based in Tielt.
